Societal influences on perfectionism and unrealistic expectations often create pressure to conform to society’s definition of success, which often prioritizes external factors like maintaining a spotless home and swiftly returning to one’s pre-pregnancy physical appearance, striving to bounce back to regular routines in all aspects of life. It creates this internal tug-of-war that can feel relentless, as we navigate between our own vision of motherhood and the constant reminders of societal expectations through social media, critical comments from others, or comparisons with unrealistic standards.

The enduring impact of societal expectations stems from generational messaging that has been passed down through the years. These deeply ingrained beliefs, worldviews, and messaging require significant effort and healing to redefine. It starts with honest conversations about the impacts of societal expectations on mothers and their mental health.

The stress and anxiety induced by societal expectations can be overwhelming for mothers, affecting their thought processes, decision-making abilities, relationships, and self-compassion.

‘I’m tired’ is more than just an expression of a mom’s physical sensation. It’s insight into her emotional well-being and what she’s unable to openly share.

When a mom doesn’t feel emotionally supported, it makes it hard to ask for help, and even harder to allow someone access to her struggles.

If you’re feeling this way, here are some ways to care for yourself:

🌻Ask yourself, “What do I need?” Whatever comes to mind is exactly what you’re needing - listen to your needs and tend to that.

🌻Find a support system that listens - whether it’s a mom group, a therapist, or a trusted friend or family member.

🌻Take time for yourself - that’s right, TAKE it. Tell your spouse/partner you’re taking time for YOU.

🌻Ask for help - we all need help, and there is nothing wrong with needing extra hands or arms.

Becoming a mom brought a depletion I wish I had known about – not just physically but mentally too.

Instead of just hearing “say goodbye to sleep,” I wish someone explained how sleep deprivation impacts your entire well-being. My first postpartum season left me feeling disconnected, my body still giving, but not feeling like mine.

Why aren’t moms sent home with a healing plan? Our bodies endure so much – from pregnancy to delivery, breastfeeding, and the aftermath of sleep deprivation, hormonal shifts, soreness, and more.

Our bodies are doing it all, yet no one fully prepares us. The toll on mental health is overlooked. The changes to our bodies and lives can be overwhelming, leaving us to navigate it alone.

In the unspoken challenges of motherhood, a mom often holds back, fearing responses like “be grateful,” “you’re lucky,” or “I did it with 3 kids” if she truly expresses herself.

So, when she’s asked, “How are you?” the answer becomes a simplified, “I’m Tired.” It’s a shield, concealing the effort it takes to hold back tears, opting for a less revealing response.

The real meaning of “I’m tired” is please help me, this is hard, and I don’t know how to say it out loud. It’s a silent plea for support, hidden behind a common phrase.

The truth is, sometimes we withhold our genuine selves because of a lack of emotional safety with those around us. It’s a vulnerable act to open up.

A true village extends beyond helping care for the baby; it encompasses those offering emotional support. 💜
